San Nicola in Carcere

carcere-01.jpg - 34926 Bytes

Today a church, San Nicola in Carcere, stands on the site of three temples of Rome's republican period which were dedicated to Juno, Spes and Janus, close to the Forum Holitorium, the cities vegetable and oil market.
In the medieval period these temples were then converted into a prison and finally the prison was turned into a church.
As unusual as the story of the place is now the look of the church, with the columns of two of the temples still being part of its walls.
